Inhibition of Anticancer Chemotherapy-induced Stomatitis by Oral Cryotherapy

Abstract
Oral mucositis is a major dose-limiting toxicity associated with anticancer chemotherapy. Oral cryotherapy has been known to induce local vasoconstriction with subsquent reduction of blood flow in oral mucosa. This study was performed to see the
effects
of cryotherapy on oral mucositis during anticancer therapy. We studied twenty-six patients with various malignancies who were treated by anticancer drugs with or without oral cryotherapy in sequence. The severity of mucositis was evaluated and
graded on
0~4 scales by attending physicians and patients themselves.
The results were as follows: Oral mucositis was seen 26.9% of patients with cryotherapy compare to 50% without cryotherapy and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.05). Oral cryotherapy also reduced the severity of oral mucositis in
11
out
of 13 patients with oral mucositis(p<0.01).
In conclusion. oral cryotherapy reduced the incidence and severity of oral mucositis in patients treated with anticancer chemotherapy. Further studies with larger sample of cases according to dose and type of chemotherapeutic agents will be
necessary.
